Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Wearing glasses

Glasses are not allowed since 2016. Always remove them before taking the photo.

❌ Shadow on background

Stand at least 2 feet from any wall to avoid shadows. Shadows are a top rejection reason.

❌ Head too small or large

Your head must fill 70–80% of the frame. Too small and it'll be rejected for non-compliance.

❌ Smiling with teeth

A neutral, natural expression is required. Smiling with teeth showing is grounds for rejection.

❌ Photo older than 6 months

US passport photos must be taken within the last 6 months to reflect your current appearance.

❌ Colored or patterned background

Any background other than plain white or off-white will result in rejection.
